REMARKS BY SAID T. JAWAD
AMBASSADOR OF AFGHANISTAN AT
THE EMBASSY OF JAPAN
“SUPPORT FOR ASCHIANA FOUNDATION TO ASSIST AFGHAN CHILDREN”

WASHINGTON, DC
FEBRUARY 23, 2010

Thank you, and good afternoon!

Ambassador and Mrs. FUJISAKI,
Friends of Afghanistan,
Ladies and Gentlemen:

Please allow me to thank Ambassador and Mrs. FUJISAKI for hosting this special event to further a noble humanitarian cause. We are profoundly grateful to Japan’s firm commitment to the reconstruction and development of our country.

Like today’s event, Japan’s assistance over the past eight years has helped change the lives of millions of needy civilians, especially women and children.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

With support from Japan and many other nations, we have been able to send back more than eight million Afghan children, both boys and girls, to school over the past eight years.

We also have been able to increase access to healthcare across Afghanistan during the same period. These efforts have helped save the lives of many women and children.

Despite these positive developments, many challenges remain to be met, as close to one million children, many of them orphaned, remain extremely vulnerable and in need of humanitarian assistance.

I am very grateful to Aschiana and every one of you for supporting this great organization that is focusing on the basic needs of street children and providing them with food, healthcare, literacy, and vocational training.

And these services could only continue if we all continue supporting Aschiana’s efforts.

Thank you.
